The addition and interior remodel to the front of Simonka Place provides much needed administrative offices, four new accessory counseling offices in support of the shelter, barrier-free restrooms, family development room, and a welcoming entry lobby area. The interior remodel was completed in two phases, allowing residents and staff to remain onsite throughout construction.
Phase 1 included both the addition and renovation of the north wing. During this phase, residents were temporarily relocated to the south wing, and modular offices were installed in the parking lot so staff could continue daily operations. The north wing had large, underutilized living spaces that were reconfigured into smaller rooms, each with its own 1/2 bathroom increasing privacy for residents. Now this wing can house approximately 30 women and children.
Upon completion of Phase 1, residents moved into the renovated north wing, allowing Phase 2, the remodel of the south wing, to begin. The south wing includes living areas, chapel, computer room, meeting room, laundry room, kitchen floor repair, and kitchen dry storage room.
Overall, a neutral interior color palette with warm, natural tones creates a calm and welcoming environment for residents and visitors. Lighting was upgraded throughout to more efficient LED lighting. During both Phases, CD Redding made safety a top priority with staff working and residents living onsite while work was being performed. Vulnerable areas were protected, placed barriers for traffic flow, and constantly kept the spaces clean. CDR communicated early and often when construction work would invade daily operations. Parts of the fire system were upgraded in both Phases. Before the project began, CDR worked with the owner and the architect to VE scope yet maintain an aesthetic appeal — problem solved numerous existing issues that were found during the course of construction.
